God created Evolution
Or perhaps he sprang
Fully formed from the consciousness of man

The chicken and the egg
Sitting in the same barnyard
Or was one created the day before
A trick by a master illusionist
Who then strode proudly off the stage
Before we could ask of him, amazed
The answer to which preceded?

Evolution created God
Who laid down for us the simple logic
That led inexorably to man
Females and males grew in consciousness
To wonder about the originator
Of super-strings and The Big Bang

And still it's inadvisable
To reach out to crush a fly
Or to cause damage to a butterfly's wing
In case you might hurt a long-lost aunt
Or with speciation be interfering

Not immutable, nor eternal
We live our lives in search of meaning
Evolving in just the same way
Called into being mindlessly
Although our desire and deepest hope
Is to join the ranks of infinity

Is God in Nature, the tree of life
Is God the growth of the tree itself?

It is no matter, in the end
We don't always need to understand
When it's beautiful enough, just to be living
And to know, being love
We are future giving.
